Katapola

Katapola with 380 residents are in the center of the island. It is the central port of Amorgos and the best natural port in Cyclades. The villages of Xilokeratidi in the north, Rahidi in the middle and Katapola south of the mountain of ancient Minoa, give to the island’s bay a special beauty.

The Katapola bay is one of the largest natural ports of the Aegean. It is located in 5 kilometers distance southwest from Chora. It is a beautiful and particularly graphical port, and around it has built three villages. Katapola, Rahidi and Xilokeratidi. A special suggestion is the beach of Ag. Panteleimonas with its crystal blue waters. You can reach it as you follow the path that leads to it from Xilokeratidi, or with the boat that does the tour of the island. In the hill that rises over Katapola are the ruins of the ancient city Minoa that had its peak during the ancient times.

The visitor of the archaeological site can see parts of the ancient walls of the city, the ancient Acropolis, the Gymnasium and the ruins of the temples from the Hellenistic era. Do not miss to visit the church of Panagia Katapoliani. The church which is devoted to Panagia is a characteristic sample of Cycladic architecture. It was built on the ruins of an ancient temple.
